Colonel Tumanjan was born in Boise, Idaho and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps following graduation from the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. in Ocean Engineering in 2003. From 2004-2007 he served with 3d Battalion, 11th Marines in the 1st Marine Division as an artillery forward observer, fire direction officer, and battery executive officer. He deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 and 2006.
From 2007-2010, he was assigned to 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, qualifying as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller and serving as a Supporting Arms Liaison Team OIC. During this tour he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008 and to the western Pacific in 2009.
From 2011-2014, Colonel Tumanjan was assigned back to 3d Battalion, 11th Marines where he served as the Battery Commander for HQ Battery, Battery K, and Battery M. During this tour he deployed in support of Marine Air Group-50 to the CENTCOM area of operations.
From 2019-2023, he was assigned to the 11th Marine Regiment in Camp Pendleton, CA. Initially assigned to 2d Battalion, 11th Marines as the battalion operations officer and executive officer, he later served as the Regimental executive officer and then the Commanding Officer of 2d Battalion, 11th Marines from 2021-2023.
Tours in the supporting establishment include command of Marine Corps Recruiting Station Fort Lauderdale from 2014-2017. In addition, Colonel Tumanjan was assigned for a joint tour with US Special Operations Command in the Strategy Division from 2023-2025.
Colonel Tumanjan is a graduate of resident Professional Military Education via the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Naval War College. He and his wife Maria have two daughters: Madilyn and Amelia.
