Retired Marine Col. Robert C. Lehnert, a former fighter pilot, reflects on flying combat missions during three separate wars, while at home in Denver, Colo., Dec. 23, 2010. Lehnert has made it his goal to make sure an accident that occurred during World War II with Marine Fighting Squadron 422, is never forgotten. Lehnert has compiled and collected many books and reports on what happened Jan. 25, 1944, when 22 of the squadron’s 23 planes were lost at sea during a flight over the Pacific Ocean.
