Raymond Kiemel, a former drill instructor, recruiter and two-time war veteran, talks with drill instructors aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Calif., May 2. Kiemel was a drill instructor in the early 1950s. In his final platoon, Kiemel trained Larry Toal, the father of 8th Marine Corps District commanding officer, Col. Mark Toal.
